First Friday: the November checkpoint

The first Friday of every month is a checkpoint, not a launch. One page, four questions, answered honestly.

What shipped

October was mostly structure: privacy and terms pages, a real standards page, three editorial templates, working link hygiene, and a rewrite of the homepage, About and Rules in plainer language. None of it looks like a new feature. All of it is the reason the rest can hold.

What slipped

The things that need other people: a mailbag with real reader questions, member retrospectives, prediction check-ins worth reading. None of those can be manufactured on a schedule, so they stay open rather than faked.

What we learned

Two things. First, a prediction without a date is a mood, and most of what people write is a mood. The number and the deadline do more work than any amount of prose. Second, removing things is faster than adding them: three features were cut this month because they made the site feel busier without making it clearer.

What is open in November

The journal needs worked examples more than it needs essays about how to write them. If you have a prediction you already made in public with a date attached, send it. It is the single most useful thing you could contribute right now.

Next checkpoint: the first Friday of December.

This piece lives in the journal — a claim you can come back to.Back to the Journal →
