Privacy Policy

Who we are

Future Commons operates weiann.com, a small community for slow thinking, honest prediction, and long-form journaling. In this policy, “we” and “us” mean the people who run this site. If you have a question about your data, use the contact form — it reaches a human.

What we collect

  • Account data. The display name, username, email address and profile details you give when you register, plus any avatar or profile fields you choose to fill in.
  • Content you post. Journal entries, forum topics and replies, comments, private messages and uploaded files. Who can see this depends on the privacy setting you pick for each item.
  • Technical data. IP address, browser and device type, referring page and timestamps, generated automatically when you visit or sign in.
  • Cookies and local storage. A session cookie that keeps you signed in, your cookie-consent choice, and aggregated analytics identifiers.
  • Email delivery data. Whether a notification or newsletter email was delivered, and opens where our mail provider reports them.

We do not collect payment details, and we do not buy personal data from third parties.

Why we process it

  • To create and secure your account, and to let you sign in — including through a social login provider if you choose that route.
  • To publish and deliver what you post, and to notify you about replies, mentions and messages.
  • To keep spam, abuse and automated junk out of the community.
  • To understand which pages are read and which topics matter, so we can decide what to write next.
  • To meet legal obligations and to defend the site against abuse.

Where the GDPR applies, our legal bases are performance of a contract (your account and the community features), legitimate interests (security, spam prevention, aggregate statistics) and consent (non-essential cookies and newsletter email).

Cookies

Essential cookies keep you signed in and record your consent choice; the site cannot work without them. Analytics cookies are set by our statistics provider and are reported in aggregate. You can accept or refuse non-essential cookies in the consent banner, and you can change that choice at any time by clearing the site’s cookies and reloading the page.

Who we share it with

  • Automattic / Jetpack — site statistics, newsletter delivery and spam filtering through Akismet.
  • Our email delivery provider — transmits notification and newsletter email on our behalf.
  • Social login providers — only if you choose to sign in with one; they return your name, email and avatar.
  • Our backup service — stores encrypted copies of the site, which include member data.
  • Google Search Console — receives aggregated search-performance data about the site, not your personal data.

We do not sell or rent personal data. We disclose it otherwise only where the law requires it or where it is necessary to protect the site and its members.

How long we keep it

Account data is kept while your account is open. Posts, comments and messages stay visible until you delete them or ask us to. Server and security logs are kept for 90 days. Rolling backups are overwritten after 30 days. When you delete your account we remove your profile and personal identifiers; anonymised post history may remain so that conversations stay readable.

Your rights

You can ask to see the data we hold about you, correct it, export it, delete it, or object to a particular use. Under the GDPR and similar laws you also have the right to withdraw consent and to complain to your local supervisory authority. Send requests through the contact form; we answer within 30 days and may ask you to confirm your identity first so that we do not hand your data to someone else.

Children

This community is for people aged 16 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from younger children. If you believe a child has registered, contact us and we will remove the account.

Where data is stored

The site is hosted on servers outside your country, and the providers listed above may process data in other jurisdictions. Where data leaves the EEA or UK we rely on standard contractual clauses or an equivalent safeguard.

Security

The site runs over HTTPS, offers two-factor authentication for accounts, limits staff access to what a task requires, and stores backups in encrypted form. No system is perfect: if a breach affects your data we will notify affected members and the relevant authority as the law requires.

Changes to this policy

When we make a material change we will note it on the update log and change the date below. Continued use after a change means you accept the revised policy.

Contact

Privacy questions, deletion requests and data-export requests all go through the contact form. We aim to reply within three working days.

Effective date: 5 November 2026.

No rush. No hot takes. This is a slow conversation — introduce yourself when you are ready.
